My (Layla) hurricane story

Updated: Apr 3, 2018

My hurricane experience for hurricanes Irma and Maria were definitely not my first experiences with hurricanes. The first experience I remember was hurricane Irene. I don’t remember much, since I was so young, but the one thing I remember is being downstairs lying in the old guest bed at my house with my mom and brother. We were there to try to get some sleep (because the hurricane hit at night, you see). My dad was going to sleep upstairs because he was going to make sure the roof wasn’t going to blow away. But if it did, he would have died. I just remember lying on the bed looking upwards, wondering if my dad was going to die (he didn’t). Irma and Maria were different. I have many more memories of those because they are so recent. Both Irma and Maria hit during the day. For Irma, it started as a regular day, except we knew a category 5 hurricane was going to hit at about noon. We enjoyed the internet and electricity the best we could, because we knew we would not have it for a while. The hurricane hit at noon, as expected. It escalated very quickly. At first we just heard blowing winds and saw swirling skies out the window, but then we felt the floor quickly rise and fall (because we are on the sid of a hill). It was almost like being in The Wizard Of Oz for a moment. Then my parents told my brother and I to get on the mattress under the table. There was a mattress under the table for that situation, but to also make it more comfortable. There was also one leaning against the table for incase the window broke. In a matter of minutes my mom was under there with us, but just as my dad was getting under, we heard wood break and wind coming in. So my parents went to go check it out. Turns out the wind was so powerful it made the wooden latch keeping the shutter for the glass doors to break, causing the shutters to swing out and the glass doors swing in. So my mom used the bookshelf to keep on door closed and my dad using our 200 pound (90.7 kilograms) generator on the other. My brother and I were still under the table, from my position I could not see what was going on. My parents were yelling and hollering while trying to keep the doors shut. I thought they were getting sucked out into the hurricane. So I was a bit freak out. After about a half an hour of so, my brother Lennon and I found out what had happened. We got out of under the table for next few hours. At around 3pm we all heard the the storm quiet down. But we knew it would not be like that for long. So we went outside to see what it was like. Everything was a mess. We found our cat Happy outside. He was very wet and scared. When we felt the wind pick up we rush back inside with the cat. Lennon and I went back under the table. It was that same as before until about 6:00pm-6:30pm. After that we had dinner. I had cereal for dinner for two days. But mt mom had saved a lot of canned food for this situation so that is what I ate after that. About a week later my dad and I went to Wendy's. Scene we had not had very decent food for a week, it was delicious. A few days later we sent my brother on a boat to a baseball camp in Puerto Rico. Then we heard about Maria. We knew we had to get my brother off of Puerto Rico and go up to New York to my aunt’s. So my dad and I went to Puerto Rico to get my brother, booked a flight on Southwest (the only airline open) and went to New York the next day. A day before Maria hit Puerto Rico. My mom did not come because she was needed on the island. When I was in New York I went to school for a month before coming back to island.
